Internships With the Ford Foundation

Internships With the Ford FoundationInternships With the Ford FoundationThe Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice offers paid internships for college students from the New York City area who likely lack the financial resources to accept unpaid internships. Foundation president Darren Walker wrote in a 2016 New York Times op-ed that unpaid internships favor those who already are economically advantaged. While some students take a summer job in food service to pay the bills, others can afford to accept unpaid jobs at high-profile organizations, setting them on a more lucrative path, he wrote. Through its internship program, the Ford Foundation aims to level the playing field. The Foundation With more than $12 billion in assets as of 2019, the Ford Foundation has spent an average of $573 million per year on grants and other charitable programming from 2014 through 2018 to support social justice initiatives, according to its 2018 financial statement. According to its website, the foundations mission includes reducing poverty and injustice, strengthening democratic values, promoting international cooperation, and advancing human achievement. The Growing Pains of Success

The Growing Pains of Success The Growing Pains of Success Symptoms include pain in legs (calves and thigh), typically during evening or nighttime and treatments range from heating pads to mild nonprescription pain medications. Yet, the biggest treatment for growing pains is perseverance. Like the common cold, if children experience growing pains theyll just have to allow nature to run its curse and their bodies to get through it.And whether or bedrngnis you believe such a condition exists in developing adolescents, one thing is certain- life has growing pains. Whether it be with relationships, academically or physically, at some point in time we all experience difficulties as we grow to reach a certain level of maturity in the different areas of our lives. And our careers are no exception.Everyone has goals and desires to achieve them we all have our own definition of success. And as we work to fulfill this definition it is then that we inevitably experience the many growing pains of success. Below are just five common growing pains people encounter on the road to success and tips on how to handle them once you cross their paths1. DisrespectSigns Symptoms People talking down to you on the job exclusion of your thoughts and ideas due to your age or years of experience (especially if both are low numbers) total disregard for your credentials and/or accomplishments, e.g. questioning the validity of your online degree or training insults to your intelligence, competence and capabilities, especially due to age, sex, disability and/or religionTreatments You must remember that people will only treat you how you allow them to. If you do not demand respect, many people you encounter wont be so willing to offer it. Take pride in who you are, your skills sets and accomplishments on the job. If youre 22 and a recent college grad, do not be intimidated by older workers or those with a longer tenure. Likewise, if youre a woman working on a team full of men, dont be nervou s. You have your position for a reason and bring something unique to the table, just like every other employee. Share your ideas, be firm with your demands and address anything you feel discriminates or disrespects you as a worker and individual.2. Solitude Signs Symptoms Friends and coworkers going down a different career path than your own new job in a new city unsupportive friends or colleagues pertaining to your goals decreasing or lack of resourcesTreatments Sometimes our chosen career path becomes lonely, especially if youre hopes and dreams are different from the norm. You may be met with adversity and naysayers telling you Your dreams are too big, It will never happen, and/or You dont have what it takes. This point in your life may feel lonely and isolated as you head in a direction no one else is willing to go, but keep pressing forward. Remember, eagles fly alone.3. RelationshipsSigns Symptoms Difficult to meet people at work unable to relate to coworkers because of age and lifestyle differences non-sociable, feeling awkward, uncomfortable and lonely in new settings moving away from friends/family for work-related opportunitiesTreatments As we grow, people will enter and leave our lives some will stay for the entire course. Creating professional relationships with your coworkers may feel uneasy at first, especially if youre on the shy side, but it is essential to getting over this growing pain. Not only will it make this stage in your life easier to deal with, you may come out with some invaluable connections and new friends.4. AdaptingSigns Symptoms Plan A fails nothing is going according to plan feelings of inadequacy as you question your ability to succeed facing obstacles, setbacks and roadblocksTreatments One thing we all know is that life never goes according to plan. The obstacles you face on the path to success are certainly growing pains, but its how you react to them that is key. Being able to adapt when life throws you a curve ball is d ire to your future success. You failed the MCAT and wont be attending medical school this year, now what? Your first attempt at opening a new business didnt work out what will you do now? Try alternative routes, retake exams, apply for that opening again next year Whatever you have to do to keep pursuing your goals, do it even if its not what youd planned.5. TransitionSigns Symptoms Finding your job unfulfilling desire a new position/career development discriminated against in workplace unethical work place draining, stressful, toxic work environmentTreatments Knowing when to leave your job on your path to success can be difficult. Some workers find themselves in very toxic and unhappy working situations, but have not decided to leave due to financial reasons, lack of future employment, or just plain old fear of consequences.Evaluate your current work situation and the pros and cons of leaving and staying. Be honest in your assessment and consider your values. A part of advancement is knowing when to close the door on one experience to open the door for the next.

Ghosting Job Candidates Can Destroy Your Reputation

Ghosting Job Candidates Can Destroy Your ReputationGhosting Job Candidates Can Destroy Your ReputationHave you ever gone on a job interview and then heard nothing from the recruiter or hiring manager even after youve sent emails or left voicemails? This is called ghosting and while the term originated in personal relationships (you go on a date and then never hear from him again), it occurs in hiring all of the time. For many years, ghosting was something recruiters and hiring managers have done to job candidates. When the unemployment rate was high, they didnt see a downside to ghosting new, qualified candidates were easy to find, recruit, and hire. The Effect of Ghosting Prospective Employees In 2018, though, the unemployment rate is lower than its been in a long time, and candidates and employees have turned the tables on employers. Chip Cutter, the managing editor at LinkedIn, noted that candidates are not returning calls from recruiters and people have started simply not sho wing up for work rather than giving two weeks notice. Turnabout is fair play, after all. Why should candidates treat recruiters and hiring managers with respect when they havent been treated with respect for years? Well, employers and candidates should always treat each other respectfully. Many recruiters are learning the hard way that their years of assuming that candidates would always be available are over and that job seekers now have the upper hand. But other than this revenge, how does ghosting affect employee recruitment? Recruiters As Public Relations Specialists This may seem ridiculous- recruiters dont talk to the press after all, and they dont try to get magazine articles written about the company, so why do they need to worry about public relations? Think about it. With whom do recruiters spend a good portion of their time talking? Non-employees, right? And most of those people will never become employees. Thats just the nature for recruiting. If you ghost candidates and treat them poorly, they will speak to their friends, and you will lose out on future candidates and future clients. You fret about customer service roles, but ignore the impact a ghosting recruiter can have on the companys growth. A bad reputation is a bad reputation- once gained, a bad reputation with prospective employees is difficult to overcome. Shrinking Pipeline for Job Applicants Everyone who applies for a job believes that they are, in some way, qualified for that job. Sometimes, this stretches the imagination, as people send in their resumes to job postings with one matching keyword. But often, candidates are good matches. And everyone who comes in for an interview is a good enough match, right? You certainly dont hire everyone you interview, but that doesnt mean all of those people are bad fits for your company forever. Many of them would be great fits for a different position or even the same position in a couple of years. A good recruiter doesnt just post ads, s he learns the people in the industry and keeps a pipeline running so that when a job opens, she can fill it quickly. If you treat prospective employees poorly, youve essentially kicked them out of the candidate pipeline. Sure, you can contact them 18 months from now, but they will remember that they came in for three different rounds of interviews and then never heard back- as a recruiter, you ghosted them. Who wants to put themselves through that again? Internal Referrals Decrease One of the best sources for job candidates is your current employees. They are experts in their fields and they tend to know other people who do what they do. But, if they refer their friends and colleagues, who then take the time to come in to interview, and then never hear from you again, they tell your current employees about what youve done. Your employees dont plan to work for your company forever. They need to maintain their reputation in their field. They wont ruin it by bringing in people who then receive poor treatment. Instead, theyll quietly stop recommending people for positions within the company. Why Ghosting Happens No one has the time. Every employee is busy. But, treating candidates politely and getting back to those who have interviewed is the right thing to do, and it will save you time in the long run. Youll increase your positive reputation, build your prospective employee pipeline, and receive referrals from current employees. Not having those things will cost you far more time than having your ATS send out emails to all candidates saying, Thank you so much for interviewing, however, weve decided to go in a different direction. Please do keep us in mind for roles for which you qualify in the future. Treat people with respect and professionalism because its the moral and ethical behavior to exhibit. And it doesnt hurt that your business will also benefit from prospective employees flocking to your door. At the same time, you will retain and nurture your current employees who feel as if you treated them and their contacts respectfully. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

Congratulations Letter Examples for a New Position

Congratulations Letter Examples for a New PositionCongratulations Letter Examples for a New PositionSending a note of congratulations to colleagues when they hit big milestones, such as a new job, is a great way to keep in touch and strengthen a connection. You should send a personal congratulations letter to former co-workers or current colleagues who are leaving for a new fleck at a different company. Receiving this type of note lets people know that you are thinking of them. Plus, sending your best wishes and congratulations is good manners and a nice gesture. Sending Congratulations on Landing a New Job Follow the tone and voice that you would typically use in correspondence with this connection - if you are writing to a former manager, your tone may be slightly more formal than if you are writing to a current co-worker who accompanies you on daily coffee breaks. If you are sending the note via email, your subject line can be Congratulations or Heard the Good News or somethin g along those lines. Even though the note is a casual, personal congratulations, make aya that your spelling and grammar are correct, and avoid abbreviations and emojis. While this person is a friend, they are also a business contact, and in this context should be accorded the respect an associate deserves. Remember that your network is a key asset in your career trajectory, and making a good impression with all your colleagues will always be beneficial. What Information You Should You Include in Your Note The note doesnt have to be formal or complicated. The main thing that you should communicate in the letter is your heartfelt congratulations. If you are sending the note to a current co-worker, its appropriate to mention how they will be missed at the office. You might take the opportunity to mention some of the projects you have worked on together, and some of the successes you have shared. Let them know that you are happy they have a new opportunity and wish them all the bes t. If youre sending a note to a former colleague, and you havent been in touch recently, you may want to let them know where and how you heard the news about their new position. You can say, I saw on LinkedIn that you got a new job as account director over at Hayes and Burnes, and wanted to reach out to say congratulations. Your note is a good option to reinforce your relationship, and you could also take the opportunity to suggest meeting for coffee to hear the details of their new position, and offer your support. You should make sure that you include your current contact information, and that you have theirs. Sending a Card Most often, a congratulations letter to a colleague for a new job will be sent through email, but sometimes sending a card through the post is appropriate. Especially today, when so much correspondence is read on a computer screen, a handwritten card can provide a personal touch to your sentiments, and may make your good wishes stand out from others. If yo u go this route, make sure your handwriting is legible, and as always, that your punctuation and grammar are flawless. New Job Congratulations Letter Example 1 Dear Evelyn, I was thrilled to hear about your new job with the Yankee Company. I know its been a long search to find the right position, but it seems like this is going to be a good match for your skills and experience. Kat Hocking - Chemical Engineer, Melbourne Water

befrderer Hocking - Chemical Engineer, Melbourne Water Kat Hocking Chemical Engineer, Melbourne WaterPosted October 13, 2011, by Louisa Veidelis Theres an engineering shortage, so there is definitely work available in Australia, especially because of the green shift that all companies are making. The skills and experience you get as a chemical engineer are quite transferable to environmental engineering roles. Kat Hocking works at Victorias Eastern Treatment Plant, which treats sewerage for 1.5 million people in Melbourne. In her role she works on developing ways our waste water can go further, a vital job in a time of drought, bevlkerung growth and climate change. She started working for Melbourne Water through their graduate program, which she finished earlier this year. What inspired this career path? I grew up in the country with parents who like being outdoors and are aware of environmental issues, so I was keen to work in an environmental field. At university, wed done tour s of some of Melbourne Waters plants. Also, one of my lecturers had done some work in Antarctica, on wastewater treatment, and that inspired me to want to do something like that. What do you do in your current job? Day to day Im based at the tertiary trial facility at the Eastern Treatment Plant. The water thats treated here is from about half of Melbournes population and is treated to secondary standard, which is the standard its been treated to since the 1970s. The project Im working on is looking at options for improving the quality of treated water to tertiary standard, which will involve adding aleidher step to the process. It will allow for increased recycling opportunities if the water is better quality you can use it for more applications. So I work on a trial facility which looks at different types of filtration and disinfection options to upgrade the standard. Day to day my role entails keeping things running or looking at specific investigations on the plant. What did you study? Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science (double degree) at Melbourne University. How did you start working for Melbourne Water? I did my final semester at university on exchange in Canada, and when I came back to Melbourne to sit an exam, I came across the graduate program online application process. Melbourne Water had been somewhere I wanted to work so I applied for it. How did you find the selection process? It was quite rigorous. If you were selected from your online application, you went to a group bewerberinterview. Then there was some online testing for verbal and numerical reasoning abilities. If you were successful at that stage you were invited to an interview with a few managers. It was my first panel interview so I approached it as just another experience and as an opportunity to practise my interview skills. But I was successful and they offered me a position What kind of work did you do during the graduate program? The program goes for three years and I did two 12-month placements and two 6-month placements. My first placement was decided for me, based on the discussions Id had during my interview process I worked in the water treatment public health team in the strategy and planning group. For my following placements, I nominated preferences from a given list of available positions. I did six months in the Waterways Group at Melbourne Water, which looks after river health. Then I did a secondment, which is an opportunity to work at a different water company as parte of the placement. I worked in the trade waste team at one of Melbournes retail water companies for six months. And my final placement started in February this year. Ive been working on the trial facilities at the Eastern Treatment Plant at Bangholme. My graduate program would have finished in February 2009, but I was offered a position so I jumped off early. My role hasnt changed much yet. Do you work in an office, lab or on site? I work in a shed Theres a sort of she d that houses each of the different trials, my times split between working there and doing hands-on type tasks. Theres also a lab on site and an office I do some things in the lab and some things, like data analysis, in the office. I get a good mix. How many people work in your team? In the operational team at the tertiary trial facility theres my supervisor, two on-site lab technicians and another operator. So there are five of us on site every day. Broader than that we work quite closely with strategy and planning teams the main decision makers about what needs to be looked at. Theyre part of the much broader team. Do issues like climate change and the drought have an impact in the work you do? Yes, definitely. The drought and increase in population are the most challenging things for the water industry at the moment. So being able to reuse sewerage is a golden opportunity. As a driver for the project, drought and climate change are significant in terms of the increased amount o f water available to substitute whats currently used. So the work I do is pretty rewarding. Does the research youre exposed to affect your own personal water usage? Do you have shorter showers? Yes, I try to. Also I try not to buy bottled water. A life-cycle assessment shows that bottled water producers use a lot more than one litre of water to make a one-litre bottle of water. Im aware that the regulations on tap water are very strict so tap water is fine to drink. I do what I can do. What else can people do in the face of these environmental issues? Shop locally and buy Australian-made produce. Are there any myths about working in sewerage that you can straighten out? I guess when people hear about where I work and what I do, it doesnt sound all that attractive Waste is not beautiful when it comes in but in terms of what can be done to treat it and the quality that can be achieved, its absolutely amazing. Around the world there are projects to treat it to a potable standard, and u sing such applications means saving on surface water thats

Retain and engage your team with mindful stay interviews

Retain and engage yur team with mindful stay interviewsRetain and engage your team with mindful stay interviewsWe all have conducted behavioral interviews to uncover the mindsets, values, self-awareness and coping skills of prospective hires. We use questions such as, Tell me why you want to work here? or There is no rule book for navigating an organization to connect with people inside and out. Tell me about a time when you did that? But why do we stop asking questions that help our teams think through their personal strategy?EngagementMost leaders want to have a conversation with their direct reports about engagement and fruchtwein employees welcome it. The truth is most managers dont know where to begin. Engagement is a 50/50 proposition with the organization unlocking the door and the employee stepping inside. We cant push them through the door. But we can create an environment that invites them in with purpose, freedom, the responsibility that comes with freedom and the fulfillm ent that results in being their best.ManagementMarcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman in their classic book First Break All the Rules show that the managers role as a catalyst is to 1) select the person, 2) set expectations, 3) motivate and 4) develop. If you cant do all four of these well their Gallop research shows that you will never excel as a manger. Companies spend a small fortune evaluating employee engagement via surveys, culture initiatives, workplace wellness, and more. Basically, as a leader if your employees can answer yes to their six closed ended questions, chances are you have the beginnings of engagement.Do I know what is expected of me at work?Do I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right? At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for doing a good job?Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person? Is there someone at work who encourages my d evelopment? But this baseline is not enough to build high performance. Research shows that people need to hear six specific compliments before they will register one negative comment as helpful and not personal criticism. Knowing that, how do we mindfully remember to continually give specific accolades about the small wins of our employees when often we, as leaders, dont need or get positive reinforcement for high achievement. Great job doesnt cut it. What I see in my coaching practice is that while most Jedi executives dont need positive feedback to strive, they do find negative criticism difficult to take. The message they hear is Im not good enough. Guess what? Your employees hear that too.Your connection to your employees is your lifeline to your success as a manager and the success of your organization. Be human. You need not be perfect. Allow employees to be imperfect so they feel safe to disclose mistakes. Process improvement will grow instead of failed outcomes. Healthy tensi on is a good thing. Beth Comstock, first chairwoman of GE told The New York Times that she asks her team,Tell me one thing I dont want to hear. Its OK to give me some bad news. In fact, I want it.Stay-interview, open-ended questionsThese questions demonstrate to employees that you care about their development, recognize their talent, and want to position them for successWhat about your job gets you out of bed in the morning?Where is our organization letting you down? Lifting you up? What needs to change? If you won the lottery tomorrow and left your job, what would you miss most?Where am I letting you down as a boss? Helping you? What needs to change?Do you feel you belong here? Why/Why not?Where do you see yourself making the greatest difference? Where would you like to?What talents do you have that we are not fully using? What keeps you here? What might entice you away?Where do you feel you are growing/stagnant in your role?If you could work on one thing that you loved what would th at be?The goal is for employees to have ownership of high impact work. Listen to them. Take Cant off the table. Engagement will follow.MaryLeeGannon, ACC, CAEis an executive coach and corporate CEO who helps busy leaders get off the treadmill to nowhere to be more effective, earn more, bemore calm and enjoyconnected relationships with the people who matter while it still matters.Watch her FREE Master Class training on Three Things to Transform Your Life and Career Right Now atwww.MaryLeeGannon.com.

5 Common Email Issues and How to Solve Them

5 Common Email Issues and How to Solve Them5 Common Email Issues and How to Solve ThemFrom the CEO to the entry-level new hire, we all struggle to manage our inbox - and our schmelzglas issues appear to be only getting worse.According to one study, we already send and receive 121 business schmelzglass every day on average, a number set to rise to 140 by 2018. Thats a lot to read - and leaves plenty of room for miscommunication.Tone, nuance and intent can be hard to convey over email. Perhaps thats why companies report an increase in workplace etiquette breaches. What defines appropriate behavior in the digital age is evolving, but good manners will always be in fashion. Here are five of the most common email issues and ways to deal with them to become a better communicator1. The silent treatmentYour boss still hasnt responded to that perfectly crafted elende you sent three days ago. What do you do? First, stop stewing about it. Your next move will vary depending on how urgently you need a response. Can you move the project ahead or come up with a solution on your own? If not, send a polite second email Wondered if youve had time to consider my request regarding Sometimes the boss has so many emails that yours may have gotten lost in the shuffle. Or perhaps pick up the phone or knock on the door.2. The one-worderThe volume of our email may be rising, but the length of responses is undoubtedly shrinking. Mobile devices are making our digital communications shorter and less precise. If a cryptic one-word response just isnt enough, dont be annoyed. The sender was probably tapping away between or during meetings. Again, pick up the phone and go straight to the source.Learn from these five tips if you think business writing is not your forte. 3. The too-big-to-send fileDont assume your correspondent can receive a big attachment. Send a preliminary note to check that it will get through on their system before you attach it. If not, services like Dropbox let you share large files through their servers. (Be sure to check your internal policies on this before uploading anything confidential.)4. The off-topic offenderA back-and-forth exchange over days or weeks can mean the topic drifts from the one originally specified in the subject line. This can create email issues if you are corresponding with more than one person. If the discussion has moved on, make it clear what matter is on the table by changing the subject line to summarize it.5. The impersonal touchEveryone has a personal style. Some people appreciate a warmer tone, which often translates to more conversational written style. Others prefer that you get straight to the point. With some, attempts at humor can fall flat or get misinterpreted. Pay attention to the styles of others and adapt yours if necessary. Also, no matter what your opinion on using reply all, remember many do not appreciate being copied unless its absolutely necessary.Beyond email issues that crop up in correspondence, a general one we all face is inbox fatigue. One final piece of advice If possible, when you go on vacation, let yourself be out of the office, even electronically. platzdeckchen up your out-of-office message with alternative contacts who can respond on your behalf while youre out.Dont want to miss our hot-off-the-press career insights?
